About the Author

Ralph H. Petrucci

Ralph Petrucci received his B.S. in Chemistry from Union College, Schenectady, NY, and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin—Madison. Following ten years of teaching, research, consulting, and directing the NSF Institutes for Secondary School Science Teachers at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, Dr. Petrucci joined the planning staff of the new California State University campus at San Bernardino in 1964. There, in addition to his faculty appointment, he served as Chairman of the Natural Sciences Division and Dean of Academic Planning before retiring from teaching.

 

F. Geoffrey Herring

Geoff Herring received his B.Sc. and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry, both from the University of London. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Chemistry of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Dr. Herring has research interests in the area of biophysical chemistry and has published over 100 papers in the area of physical chemistry and chemical physics. Recently, Dr. Herring has undertaken studies in the use of information technology and interactive engagement methods in teaching general chemistry with a view to improving student comprehension and learning. Dr. Herring has taught chemistry from undergraduate to graduate levels for 30 years and has twice been the recipient of the Killam Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

 

Jeffry D. Madura

Jeffry D. Madura received his B.A. from Thiel College and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Purdue University. He is currently Professor and Chair in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Madura’s research interests are in the area of computational chemistry and biophysical chemistry, and he has published over 70 papers in the area of physical chemistry and chemical physics. Recently, Dr. Madura has undertaken studies in the use of technology and interactive personal response systems in teaching general and physical chemistry with the goal of improving student comprehension and learning.  Dr. Madura has taught chemistry from undergraduate to graduate levels for 15 years and has been the recipient of a Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award.

 

Carey Bissonnette

Carey Bissonnette received his B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Waterloo, Ontario and his Ph.D. in Theoretical Chemistry from the University of Camridge. He is currently Continuing Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Waterloo. He has won awards for excellence in teaching, including the University of Waterloo’s Distinguished Teacher Award in 2005. Dr. Bissonnette has made extensive use of technology in both the classroom and the laboratory in order to create an interactive environment for his students to learn and explore. For the past several years, he has been actively engaged in undergraduate curriculum development, high school liaison activities, and the coordination of the University’s high school chemistry contests that are written each year by thousands of students around the world.

Excellent work, but parts of it may need an instructor's guidance

I used an earlier edition of this fine book some years ago in teaching a college-level history of rock and roll, and the only reason I give it four rather than five stars is the obscene price. Stuessy's aim in writing the book was not just to introduce the history of rock and roll, but to introduce students to the various elements of music (melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre) and of musical formal structures: these items are covered in detail, relating to the music of the appropriate chapter, in end-of-chapter supplements. In other words, Stuessy is trying in part to promote musical literacy among people who do not take a more traditional class in "music appreciation." I would not expect that many people without some formal musical training could make complete sense of the supplements, but it is a textbook, not a self-help manual, and I had great success with the book in class. The main text, however, is independent of the more technical supplements, and can be read as an excellent and insightful history of rock and roll.

Incomplete

This book has a publication date of 2008, and while it thoroughly covers the history of rock music through the 1980's, it's very unfortunate that it does not provide significant coverage of the last two decades. The 00's are almost over, and there have been significant changes to rock over the past two decades that deserve much greater coverage.

There is barely any coverage of the grunge era, and little or no coverage of the post-grunge era, the fusion of metal and hip-hop (Linkin Park, Rage Against the Machine, Papa Roach), the new alternative metal scene of the 00's (Disturbed, Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle), the re-emergence of punk and the new genres it has spurred (emo, new garage rock, pop-punk), the fusion of rock music with dance (Finger Eleven, Good Charlotte), or the thorough history and maturing of rap and hip hop. The last two decades have provided a very rich history of developments in rock music and should be covered if you are going to claim to provide a "complete" history of rock music through 2008. Rock music does not just cover the "60s, 70s, 80s, and today." "Today" should not be inclusive of the 90s and 00s, for each decade deserves its own unique chapter in the history of the most advanced form of popular music in the history of the world.

An enthusiastic but one-sided overview

This brief survey educates one about human rights while advocating a very liberal interpretation of them.

In truth, I was torn between assigning this book four stars or three. The book itself is quite good, but I found myself getting impatient with it by the end, and I wasn't sure whether it was because of the presentation, or because I found I didn't agree with Mr. Clapham's eagerness to stretch the concept of human rights to cover the widest possible set of circumstances.

This is the only volume of the "Very Short Introduction" series I've read so far, and I find this publishing idea very attractive. I bought the book because I was drawn to the idea of a high-level "briefing document" approach. What I was hoping for and expecting was a completely balanced treatment, and this is what I feel I did not get.

I really appreciated the short potted history of human rights early in the book, and learned many interesting things, such as the role H. G. Wells played in formulating and popularizing the idea of human rights. But as the book goes on to treat various social-justice issues, such as food, education, housing, work, and discrimination, I felt that I was really reading a progress report on how the human-rights movement has helped to promote a left-wing social agenda worldwide.

While there's nothing wrong with being politically progressive, I sense danger in the idea of having "human rights" overtaken by any one political point of view. For my part, I'm a passionate believer in human rights, but in a much more restricted set of rights than what is envisaged in this book and, apparently, in the human-rights movement generally. But Mr. Clapham is dismissive of those who criticize the "politicization" of human rights; to him, human rights are about politics, and those who don't see this just don't get it.

By the end of the book Mr. Clapham finally takes explicit aim at those who are more reserved in their definition of human rights:

"Those who insist on a narrow meaning seek to confine human rights to an historically based determination of specific governmental duties to refrain from infringing traditional liberties; the wider vision of human rights allows for consideration of the problems of hunger, poverty, and violence facing billions of people."

I suspect that not many people who question Mr. Clapham's liberal interpretation of human rights would accept his characterization of their viewpoint. In a "briefing document" of this kind, more balance is essential. Also, it would have been good to begin the book with this sentence, so that we could know from the start just how committed the author is to one side of the question.

Maybe I'm being too harsh. Mr. Clapham does make efforts throughout to present other views, noting that "critics say..." But it was as though by the end he just could not bear to wear the "impartial" mask any more.

Human Rights: (almost) all you need to know

Andrew Clapham is Professor of Public International Law at the Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva. His "Human Rights: A Very Short Introduction", is a newly updated introduction to human rights issues and the frameworks within which international human rights legislation is developed and adopted.

At nearly 190 pages, this volume is considerably bigger than many others in Oxford's series of "Very Short Introductions", although it still does little more than touch the surface of its subject. In just nine chapters, the book presents a brief overview of what might constitute a human right (and what doesn't) and why they have been developed, looks at the history of human rights thinking, explains how international human rights movements interact with and influence foreign policy development, and considers in turn each of the principal rights that current thinking deems humans to have. The author considers how human rights considerations may sometimes sit at odds with other interests at a national level -- especially those to do with national security, fiscal matters and religious affairs -- as well as relations between nations and states.

The book provides a valuable and essential introduction to any important subject. It is a bit of a dense and very academic read in places, but it will tell you most of what you need to know for a reasonable understanding of the current state of play in the ever developing (and widening) arena of fundamental human rights.

Great book, very helpful

This book is a fine, understandable guide for anybody considering a stem cell treatment. It was written by a stem cell researcher at the University of California, but does not bog down in technical information. The goal of the author is to explain complex scientific issues in a way we can all understand. The author has faced a grave illness and knows firsthand the type of pressures that they can generate. He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer at the age of 42, a very young age to come down with that affliction. Going through that experience was one of the important reasons he wrote this book - to help other persons like himself who are trying to come to grips with difficult medical and scientific matters. If you are one of those persons, I recommend the book highly. If you are just seeking more information about stem cell research, it has clear and forthright explanations about the field. Stem Cells 101

As a stem cell scientist and now editor, I've read a fair few non-fiction science books in my time. Most struggle with the task of presenting complicated data and theories to a general readership, and the resulting manuscript is usually dense, convoluted, and packed with jargon. By contrast, Stem Cells: An Insider's Guide is easily accessible and moreover is entertaining - a key ingredient for many readers.

The book is a whirlwind tour through the world of stem cells. It discusses not only the basic science, but more thorny issues like ethics, regulation, and the patient-doctor perspective. For a stem cell scientist, it is at times too simple. But that is deliberate, as any additional complexity would probably deter a wider audience. For the patient, this book can read like a self-help guide, and in many ways it is: questions will be answered, and the resources to find out more are provided. The book is largely US-centric, which is expected given the author's background.

In short, there's something in here for everyone. This book is best for those who want to find out more about stem cells: what they are, what they can do, what they can't do, how they are used currently and what promises they hold for the future.

Making the science accessible

It is very rare to find a scientist who can write eloquently about a very technical, complex, controversial subject and make it understandable and accessible to the general public. This book is exactly what it purports to be...an insider's guide to the galaxy of stem cells. Regenerative medicine and the future of personalized medicine are revolutionary topics even among the select group of scientists who DO understand the complex technicalities. Dr. Knoepfler does a masterful job of explaining what we should all have learned in high school science and are now reading about in the newspaper or hearing about on TV and radio. After you finish reading this book, please consider donating a copy to your local public library. I would encourage anyone who wants to support our future STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) students to get this book into school science curriculums and libraries. Should be required reading for all medical school students.

AMAZING INSIGHT

This book is a definite MUST READ. Adayara shares his experiences in a "no holds barred" manner, which is refreshingly honest. As an indigo, I found myself completely relating to his journey even though I never had to struggle with addictions.

Just plain odd

The slim volume (under 100 pages) frankly didn't do much for me. I wanted to like it, but just couldn't. The excessive use of both bold and italic text was just distracting and quickly annoying. The author's autobiographical story was just plain odd. The suspension of disbelief required to complete reading this was simply beyond me. I cannot recommend this unless you follow the author's beliefs.
