Natural Hazards and Environmental Change is a scientifically sound and well-written book giving a comprehensive overview of modern hazard investigations. Especially interesting is the main theme, i.e. the thesis that anthropogenic factors are the main reason for these alarming events. This might have a positive effect in stimulating desirable social and political reactions. I am glad to have this useful book in my own library.

Hysterical academics

Global warming proponents have had a good time publishing hysterical predictions of imminent disaster, and McGuire leads the pack. This book was published in 2002, and in the ten years since then, the major disasters have been entirely natural and totally unrelated to alleged climate change. Recent tsunamis occurred along known crustal faults, and have been the most serious disasters in terms of loss of life. To start with, these academics accept the flawed conclusions of the 2001 IPCC report, a report now known to be biased and flawed, as the Climategate messages showed (with the biased hockey stick graph, for example). The frequency or intensity of hurricanes has not increased at all (one of the results the authors predicted with confidence), and if anything, world temperatures have fallen rather than risen. The authors whip up hysterical nonsense when discussing other "imminent" catastrophes as well, such as meteorite strikes, and giant landslips, none of which have come to pass. So much for their predictions. Their book has the superficial look of a serious academic treatise, but the contents are very seriously flawed. For example, when discussing the historic record, they totally ignore the fact that past disasters or storms were frequently under-reported, and only the very worst reached the record books. Such a naive and gullible approach to such a serious subject undermines the credibility of this work, and it is best avoided for the hysterical clap-trap it surely remains.

Natural hazards considered under climate change scenarios

The authors are from the Benfield Grieg Hazard Research Centre and the Dept. of Space and Climate Physics (all University College London). The book has been published in 2002, and is therefore heavily based on the results of the 3rd assessment report of 2001 by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), who upgraded their temperature rise forecasts to 8 degrees Celcius by the end of the century. The natural hazards in this book are described in the light of IPCC's forecasts.

The book is very readable (thanks to the clear writing, a transparent outline and a summary at the start of each chapter).

Windstorms are described to anthropogenic climate change and are shown to have the potential for large changes for relatively small changes in the general climate. Its natural patterns of climate variability are presented, amongst which ENSO, NAO, and PNA (Pacific North American teleconnection). The latest studies are presented which try to observe and predict the frequency and severity of extreme windstorms on a spatial and temporal scale.

River and coastal floods under global warming are examined. Most research on river floods has concentrated on changes in observed precipitation and prediction methods, but the authors also present non-climatic factors involving human influences on the river basin. Coastal flooding from tropical and extratropical storms under sea level change is investigated, as well as sea temperature changes (heat - and cold waves).

The 1999 Venezuela landslides, causing 50 000 fatalities, have put this undervalued natural hazard on the agenda again. The authors concentrate on the water accumulation below the surface of unstable slopes. The landslide's rheological properties (which resist the movement) are studied under environmental change.

Sea level change is discussed under the uncertainties of response to warming of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets and the effect of CO2 gas mitigation in the coming decades. The effect of sea level rise on submarine landslides and as a consequence ocean-wide tsunami is analysed. Coastal erosion and other geomorphological effects of sea level rise are left out here.

A very interesting chapter on asteroid and comet impacts as initiator of environmental change is included in the book. Time domain simulations of a 20km/s impact in a 4 km deep ocean are presented (and comparable to the Deep Impact scenario ([...]

The book ends with some results from a recent paper in Science (v 289, p 2068-74, DR Easterling et al) on different forecasts of climate extremes. The authors plead for political will from industrialised countries such as USA, Japan and Australia to invert their increase in gas emissions before the hazardous aspects of climatic shift make themselves felt.

About two years ago, the author developed this tool named Harp that has turned out to be extremely helpful for optimizing Web UI performance. A very useful book for all levels of Java developers

This is a quantitative, rigorous, unique Java performance book, written by a well-recognized software engineer with more than a decade's experience in the field. It starts with an easy-to-understand introduction to queuing theory, and then expands into both the modern hardware architecture and JVM internals to help a reader establish a solid knowledge base to start with for understanding Java performance and scalability.

The second part of the book is about Java performance and scalability in practice. Chapter 5 illustrates how compressing ordinary object pointers (OOPs) helped a real enterprise Java product in terms of saving JVM Eden and Tenured spaces. Chapter 6 presents a quantitative case study of tuning enterprise Java application performance and scalability based on a real product. This case study can be used by an enterprise Java dev team as a template about how to conduct performance and scalability testing, how to analyze bottlenecks, and how to tune all tunable parameters to achieve the best possible performance and scalability for a product. Chapter 7 uses quantitative data to demonstrate the importance of choosing efficient algorithms for building a potentially high performing, scalable enterprise application. It also quantitatively shows the efficacy of a widely applicable performance tuning technique of array processing that no enterprise application should miss.

The last two chapters are about Java performance and scalability on Linux and VMware. The Linux chapter reveals an important fact that performance on Linux is not a giving out of the box and one must know how to tune to get it. The VMware chapter serves not only as a performance-oriented tutorial about how a VM works by virtualizing CPUs and memory, but also as a concrete case study of the rarely closely-examined performance disparity between a VM and a comparable physical system.

Poor Exegesis

The author takes many verses out of context to proof text her points. As a result, she often comes up with incorrect or incomplete conclusions. She seems to have a very shallow understanding of Scripture, and a bit of an egalitarian bent. This may be good for selling books, but does not lead to an accurate representation of God's design for marriage.

The author is also a bit confused. She writes the book as though she were writing to women, not to men. She does not understand men or how they think.

I have no doubt that there are some good things said in the book, but it is not worth the effort to dig them out. And while digging them out, a reader that is not well versed in Scripture may be led to wrong conclusions about what Scripture, in its entirety, really says on the subject.

From a woman's perspective... this book is right on. However, I think the few men who read the book left negative comments because MAYBE they have a problem listening to women and or trying new things (when it comes to pleasing their wife). Emilie was right on with the material she presented; however, she has to remember we are still in a man's world and the last thing a MAN, MAN wants is a woman telling them anything. This is sad, but it's true. My husband is a MAN, MAN... he has to learn most things on his own. Maybe this advise would have been taken a lot better coming from Bob, Emilie's husband. MEN... Get with it!

The author of this book, Brian Baker, was a 'born again' fundamentalist Christian for seventeen years. For ten of those years he was the founding pastor of one of Australia's largest churches (1979-89). Following the failure of his marriage, he resigned from the ministry and then spent the following few years seriously examining his faith and the veracity of the Bible. Finally he came to the conclusion that his Christian beliefs were seriously flawed and that the Bible is entirely the result of human invention, imaginations and myths passed down from generation to generation. As the Bible is then based on 'hearsay' and written by at least 40 different authors over a period of up to 1,600 years, none of whom were eyewitnesses to the events they recorded, it cannot substantiate the claim that it was 'inspired by God.' The result of Brian's search for evidence caused a personal transformation from believer to realist, rationalist, skeptic and atheist. He published his first book - From Faith to Reason - in 2009 which contains the reasons why he no longer believes in the existence of God, angels, demons, the devil, heaven, hell or an afterlife. In this book - Nonsense from the Bible - Brian uses the Bible texts to demonstrate their inaccuracies, inconsistencies, contradictions and fantasies. He deals with major issues which are widely believed and accepted as factual events such as the Creation story, the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus and the prophecies concerning Jesus. Chapters are also devoted to the question of the second coming of Jesus and Christian Family values. Brian also totally invalidates the so-called 'power of prayer' and the claims that God heals the sick. This would be a 'hard read' for many Christians who totally believe that the Bible is literally 'The Word of God' and accept it as absolute truth. Brian also believed that for all those years but over a period of time and investigation by seeking evidence other than the Bible he was able to accept that he had been deceived and deluded - or as he now says, 'Once I was blind - but now I see!' This is an 'easy' read for those who may question their own faith as it provides some convincing information concerning the validity of the Bible.

About the Author

BiographyBrian Baker was born in England and during the 1960s he owned and operated a successful chain of Record Stores. In 1972 the family moved to New Zealand where they held a Christian Youth Club on their beautiful ocean front property. Brian and his wife also began working with a local Christian Pastor and assisted him in the work of the ministry. In 1978 Brian again moved his family, this time to USA where he and his wife and eldest son attended Rhema Bible Training Centre in Tulsa Oklahoma. After graduation in 1979 the family finally moved to Perth Western Australia where they founded a new church. From small beginnings their ministry grew during the following years to become one of the largest church congregations in Australia with an attendance of over 2500. Brian travelled overseas to many countries and across Australia speaking at large and small churches.

In 1989 Brian and his wife resigned as Pastors from the ministry when their marriage finally failed. Brian handed the church and ministry over to his eldest son, then, aged 29. The following years were difficult and extremely challenging for Brian as he adjusted to life after the ministry. It was also during those years that he was able to seriously question and investigate the evidence to support his beliefs. Over a period of time he finally came to the conclusion that he could no longer believe in the existence of God or the validity of the Bible. Brian emerged from this experience finally as a realist, rationalist, skeptic and atheist.

Brian is now retired and spends most of his time writing. His first book - 'From Faith to Reason' first published in 2009 has now been updated and re-edited and was published in September 2011. His second book - 'Rest in Peace & LIVE! - Personal Peace without God' was published in March 2012. Brian's latest book is - Nonsense From The Bible - published in August 2012. All his books are available in both eBook/Kindle format and Paperback.

Great for beginning doubters from an enlightened former pastor

This is a good introduction to biblical criticism and a quick and easy read for doubting pew potatoes written by a former celebrated pastor who has examined the evidence after leaving the pulpit. As one who has read much on the subject since retirement, my only minor quibble is that I wish the author had briefly mentioned some of the midrashic elements in the Gospels wherein their authors appear to have borrowed from the Old Testament when presenting some of the alleged events of an earthly Jesus. I also thought there could have been more emphasis on the fact that the Gospel writers were clearly writing long after the Old Testament "prophesies" so it is easy to claim something is prophecy by manufacturing events to appear they were predicted in the past - though the author does do a nice job discussing why popular prophesies were not really predicting what many fundamentalists claim. Despite my more advanced reading on the subject, I nonetheless found this an enjoyable read. Since I am now blind, I appreciate this is available on Kindle because I use the Amazon Kindle text-to-speech app for the blind to hear books read to me now. Anyway, this serves as a fairly good primer and is recommended for newbies to critical biblical study and those interested in hearing from a former pastor.

Because I have been lied to all my life! I was raised as a strict Jehovah's witness and everything I believed was based on stories from the bible that were were never proven to be true! Do you know how many JWs died not accepting blood transfusions? All because of some silly book written by men!

Easy to read and understand

This is a good follow up to Brian's previous book 'From Faith To Reason'. Brian presents his case of nonsense from the bible in a clear yet light hearted way. You might be surprised or even be angry at Brian for saying the bible is filled with nonsense but the evidence is right there for all to see.

I enjoyed the many examples given by him. He makes it easy for the reader by underlining the actual verses in question while offering them in full context. Readers can read the actual bible passages in this book without referring to the bible. This book is by no means exhaustive. Nevertheless, it is a very enjoyable read.

About the Author
Edward H. Levi (1911–2000) was attorney general of the United States from 1975 to 1977, president of the University of Chicago, and dean of the University of Chicago Law School.

Compact "Introduction"

A small book concerning Edward Levi's theory on legal reasoning. The size is perfectly compact, but don't let that fool you. Levi's reasoning takes serious concentration to follow. By no means an "introduction" to the law, you should have a fairly good grasp on the workings of the court system before trying to finish this. The excellent new foreword to this edition by Schauer helps give needed context. Recommended for anyone heading to law school or interested in legal theory.

Heavy going

It's the first legal book I ever bought. I found it difficult to follow - perhaps a more basic introductory text to Law is needed before attempting this one. To be honest I gave up after about 30 pages.
