SOILLESS GARDENING, THE COMPLETE GUIDE, 1941 ed.

The Complete Guide To Soilless Gardening

The first edition of Soilless Gardening came out in 1940. However, hydroponics does not truly exist before 1929. Gericke does mention a process of soilless gardening in a lab in 1860 by a German agricultural chemist, Knop, and later, in 1868, by Knop and Sachs adding chemicals to water to obtain nutrient solutions. But the hydroponic record is pretty much silent until Gericke's inventions. It was not until the introduction by him using a basin method in 1929 applying water culture for crop production, that hydroponic farming actually starts.

Early as this book is, it constitutes a classic text still useful today. You will find an amazing spectrum of practical advice found nowhere else in one volume. For example, he describes how he harvested over a thousand lbs of Sutten's Best tomatoes from a single outdoor basin on 1/220th of an acre (120 square feet!). How he does everything is completely described in this great book. The science is dated in a few places, such as using wood instead of less expensive modern materials to construct the basins. Or, for example, his use of wood shavings to fill the basins. He had to work with the materials available in 1940. That is the only reason I rated the book with four stars. But you will not go wrong in buying the book and applying the information found within its pages for the hydroponic know how is useful to this very day. And,even if for some reason, you opt for all wooden construction. The book tells you how to go about doing all wood.

What else can be said for a book that went through four editions sold out from 1940 to 1941? This is the book that the US Army used to keep our armed forces in the South Pacific well fed and fighting eating fresh hydroponic vegetables during WWII. Those coral islands without soil could grow little else than coconuts. And it will be hydroponic vegetables that will feed us when we begin to have colonies on Mars or other inhospitable planets.

I liked this story a lot. The things this billionaire puts this young woman through is crazy. Taking her to an island and having sex because he wants to (and I think she also wanted to), and planning to leave on that island until she is completely his. The sex in the water under the falls is great as well as the sex on the boat and what he has in store for her next. I have read all of the stories in the series, and I was not disappointed in the least. I am looking forward to the next of the Captured bride series.

The twelve couples whom Renée riese Hubert describes are Sophie Taeuber and Hans Arp; Valentine and Roland Penrose; Leonora Carrington and Max Ernst; Unica Zurn and Hans Bellmer; Kay Sage and Yves Tanguy; Lee Miller and Man Ray; Aliced Rahon and Wolfgang Paalen; Remedios Varo and Benjamin Peret; Hannah Hoch and Raoul Hausmann; and Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Often the woman in a partnership, far younger than her male companion, had just begun her career as an artist and had entered the relationship as a junior partner in need of support and guidance. Not surprisingly, her association usually resulted in, and often ended with, an intense assertion of independence. In her examination of these partnerships, Hubert focuses on comparing the art that the couples produced, apart or together.

The author of well over a hundred articles, texts, and books of poetry, Renée Riese Hubert is a professor emerita of comparative literature and French at the University of California, Irvine.

Disappointing

André Breton and other theorists of the Surrealist movement viewed women as muses and subjects of art, not as artists in their own right--yet many male Surrealists had affairs with, or even married, women who ultimately established substantial artistic reputations of their own. A careful study of the personal and artistic relationships within these couples could do much to illuminate, not only the work of the artists themselves, but the gender issues that affected artists, especially women artists, during the period of the 1930s through 1950s. I hoped that this book would present such a study, but unfortunately, it does not. It provides surprisingly little biographical information on the individuals or on their personal interaction, focusing mainly on detailed analysis--but only sometimes direct comparison--of specific works. I was further frustrated to see that most of the illustrations are in black and white, and only about half of the works described in detail appear at all.

I sampled two essays, those on Kay Sage-Yves Tanguy and on Lee Miller-Man Ray. The Sage-Tanguy essay was particularly unsatisfying. It gives almost no biographical information on either artist, and some of what it does give is inaccurate. It analyzes Sage's works in seemingly random order and compares them with those of Tanguy in only a few instances. The chapter on Miller and Ray was better, but concentrates more on their fashion photographs than on their more obviously Surrealist works.

Hubert is to be praised for including some less well known couples, such as Alice Rahon and Wolfgang Paalen, along with famous ones such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. However, her list contains some striking omissions, most notably Max Ernst-Dorothea Tanning. She covers Ernst in connection with Leonora Carrington, but his relationship with Carrington was relatively brief, whereas he actually married Tanning and spent his life with her after he moved to the United States.

About the Author
Anne Cameron was born in Nanaimo, BC. She began writing at an early age, starting with theatre scripts and screenplays. In 1979, her film Dreamspeaker, directed by Claude Jutra, won seven Canadian Film Awards, including best script. After being published as a novel, Dreamspeaker went on to win the Gibson Award for Literature. She has published more than 30 books, including the underground classic Daughters of Copper Woman, its sequel, Dzelarhons, novels, stories, poems and legends - for adults and children. Her most recent novels are Family Resemblances, Hardscratch Row, and a new, revised edition of Daughters of Copper Woman. She lives in Tahsis, BC

Daughters of Copper Woman

My first reaction to this book was that it was one of the most beautifully written books I have read, one that cries out to be read aloud. Anne Cameron's sentences read like poetry rather than prose, very lyrical and rhythmical. There's no way its content could be fiction; she must have talked with the women memorizers who remember the oral legends for the Vancouver Nootka Native American tribes. Copper Woman is both the mother of the tribe from whom they are all descended and the respected Old Woman that is within each woman helping her to endure, to remember the old secrets and teachings, and to relearn any lost secrets. Copper Woman is there when the "keestadores" turned the Nootka world upside down and is there yet today as the Woman's Society shares its knowledge and soft power with all the women of the world.

My favorite all time book.

This book contains stories from the native people
of Vancouver Island, retold by Anne Cameron
much as they had been told to her.

You will find it is a collection of stories, many about
Copperwoman. Though she is more diety than human,
her joy and pain are terribly real.

Woven throughout the stories are bits and pieces
of the present day. As you read you find yourself
weaving in and out from past to present and then back
to the past again. As I progressed through the book I felt
a deep sense of connection with women of all time.

Enchanting and painful history

The story that is being told here, goes directly to the heart. The whole book breathes a feeling of ancient indian mythology and knowledge. It is enchanting to read about this vast amount of indian knowledge and about the completeness of their view on the world, which is so different from 'western' approaches. It is also painful to read about the losses as a result of wars and as a result of their being unique and not adapted.
