Best text I have found

De Janvry and Sadoulet’s Development Economics: Theory and Practice, is the best text I’ve used in nearly 20 years of teaching an undergraduate development economics course. It is remarkably current, drawing on new insights from behavioral economics, experimental economics and RCTs, as well as the traditional development economics literature. It is also very customizable. The more technical material is often treated in stand-alone sections, and this has allowed me to choose appropriate readings for my intermediate-level undergraduate economics and development studies students, but I could also imagine incorporating the technical sections in a masters-level applied development policy course. I also like the book’s focus on analytical tools and development diagnostics, given the field’s increasing demand for rigorous impact evaluation. Finally, the quantitative exercises using data from developing countries are excellent learning tools and are very much appreciated by my students, even those who initially approached quantitative work with a great deal of trepidation. In their course evaluations and in focus-group discussions, my students consistently rate these exercises and the use of “real data” as one of the strongest aspects of the course.

The only shortcoming I see in this first edition is that the quantitative exercises are only available in Excel and STATA. I’m hoping future editions will include R code.

A glimpse into the Darkness

I started reading this book with a very skeptical view. The writer purports to be a security contractor working along the southern Algerian border, and that he was allowed into the Sufi lodges of Nafta, Tunisia, on his time off, specifically the heretical Izzeddini sub-branch of a major Sufi sect originally founded in Algeria.

In English there is very limited occult writing related to Sufism, and instead of anything with meat in it we read Rumi's poetry, The Conference of the Birds, and other books so watered down as to become too watered down for modern consumption. This book is the opposite. It's to the point, extremely well boiled down and free from painful obscure allegory.

In it you won't find a path to follow, you won't find specific stuff you can do, and you won't find the ultimate secret. That's unfortunately something outside of our ability to find unless we someone leave for the desert and find a teacher who'll guide us along that specific path. Regardless of it, it's very informative and in it you can see the parallel links in that form of Sufism to other Left Hand Path organizations that guide you to the same point: "sirr al-asrar."

About the Author

Kathy B. Grant, EdD, is an associate professor of Curriculum and Instruction at SUNY Plattsburgh’s School of Education. She taught undergraduate courses in family involvement, as well as graduate courses in educational psychology and child development. She also worked as a home-school coordinator through Title 1 in the Missoula School District in Missoula, Montana. During her six years in this position, she oversaw the development of family resource centers at the elementary and middle school levels, worked with family outreach specialists and social workers, established parent libraries, and conducted home visits. As home-school coordinator, she helped develop an Even Start program serving children and parents. Having taught second, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, as well as high school, she has worked collaboratively with families for more than 30 years. In 2014 in collaboration with two rural upstate New York school districts, she consulted on establishment of two elementary family resource centers. These two centers will be part of a larger SUNY clinical field experience effort to prepare teacher candidates to authentically work with families.



Julie A. Ray (Ph.D., University of Missouri, Columbia) is a professor of Education and Department Chairperson at Southeast Missouri State University. She has been in the field of early childhood and elementary education for over 31 years. As a primary grades teacher and librarian, she worked hard to develop positive relationships with the families of her students. As a teacher educator in Early Childhood Education at two different four-year universities, she has taught both undergraduate and graduate level courses in family engagement, as well as done numerous presentations and publications on collaborating with diverse families.

No kidding, no exaggerating, probably the worst book I've ever read.

This book is an abomination to have new teachers read. Not only is there advice terrible, in some cases (such as videotaping your students and sending videos out or violating FERPA) they are totally illegal and can get you and your school in huge trouble. They also take the few legitimate sources they use out of context to cherry pick for their absolutely horrendous argument while predominantly using very flawed metastudies. I couldn't possibly rate this book low enough. These people are entirely wastes. Do not follow their advice such as "provide transportation and child care for the parents of your families so they can come to parent meetings." This is a ridiculous cost in time and money to ask of a teacher on a small salary who already works 60-80 hours a week most likely, not to mention that providing child care for parents leaves you open to hideous lawsuits if anything goes wrong. These writers are malevolently ignorant and the only thing this book should be used for is critical thinking for new teachers on what is wrong with all the things they put out there. Terrible. Just the worst.

School reading

I had to read this for grad school. If you have ever worked in K-8 setting, this is mostly common sense. Some people would still benefit from reading it. It's not an intellectual read. It's more for someone who might be quite culturally sheltered, or perhaps for those who have never worked in an urban setting.
