Great new series

I bought this book from a Bargain Booksy deal and I loved it. It was a good mystery and it was funny and made me laugh out loud a few times. This was the first in a new series and it introduced some characters I hope will stay around and be developed.
I would definitely recommend this book, especially if you like witty characters and a good whodunit!

This book was a fast paced and fun read. Our hero is an irreverant but very smart guy with all kinds of ways to solve a mystery. Good read.

Great read, Fast-paced fun and Head-spinning Narrative

What do you get when you mix Elmore Leonard with Agatha Christie and add a dash of Tolstoy? "Reluctant Dick," is as enjoyable a mystery as you will find on any bookshelf. Richard Sherlock, Chicago detective, works at raising two feisty daughters while his ex-wife continues to try to pick his pocket for more child support during his investigation of the murder of Alvin J. Augustus, seedy financier. Stevens proves Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina" axiom that "every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way," while moving the plot forward with sparkling dialogue and a wry sense of humor. Sherlock is nothing if not dogged, and resolves the murder amidst a cast of characters which would do Leonard justice. The wrap-up? A terrific Christie whodunit, unraveling the motives (everyone has one)...and the murder.

Will we see Sherlock again? Only Stevens knows...another mystery.

This series was amazing! The story picks up where book 2 left ...

This series was amazing! The story picks up where book 2 left off with Colin And Ben still struggling with the pain of their son being taken from them. They have outside help and I really liked how all the wolves came together to help Ben and Colin.

A lot happen in so few pages but this installment answered any lingering questions. Happy endings all around and I was happy yet not surprised by what happened with the Waters family.

This was a great series and I look forward to reading more by this author!

Good Shifter Series

Avenging The Omega is the third book in this series. The first two are well written and interesting and this one is, too. The series focuses on Colin and Ben, their relationship, and how to escape from the military. Of course there's a lot more going on but I'm not giving away the story. Colin and Ben overcome more obstacles in this story and start their family life.

SPOILERS:

I would have liked one little glimpse of Miranda rejoining her husband. What will the doctors do now that the program is under investigation and their 'boss' is taken away? Will they seek refuge with the wolf packs? Where will Colin and Ben settle?

Will Colin And Ben find more wolves on their own . . . And if so, how will they go about it? Obviously there are wolves in the human population and the wrong people are discovering them. Something's got to give!

I would have liked a bit more follow up on Black and if he was taken care of. Or if he was freed. His capture wasn't enough for me. He needed to go down . . . hard.

Other than those I enjoyed the three short stories. The characters were engaging and well defined. Despite the page length there was character growth from both Colin and Ben as they suffered loss and joy. Peanut was just a bonus and oh so cute. I hope we hear more about this couple as the series continues. Maybe they'll be role models for other alpha and omega pairs as the world doesn't seem to know much about them. - Dan's Wife

EDIT: I'd be curious to see how Ben's pack accepted Colin. These are military trained wolves and have this hard core vibe. How will they transition to civilian life. Will they get mates, too? Not omegas but mates?

Great ending!

I just loved this three part trilogy! I think it's my favorite alpha/omega/mpreg...you know, that type of story, that I have read. There is action, romance, hotness, and it is more complex than other stories of a similar vein here on Amazon. I can't wait for the next series with Sawyer to start up (hopefully soon!!)

A very fresh romance

In Shelter Valley, Arizona Rebecca and Will Parsons live a happy loving life together. Perhaps, the only regret shared by the duo after two decades of bliss is that they never had a child regardless of the fact that they both wanted one and kept trying. However, over time both accepts the obvious that no child is forthcoming. The barren scenario abruptly ends when at forty-two years old Rebecca becomes pregnant.

Suddenly, the idyllic world of Becca and Will is thrown into chaos. Goals were changed when it became obvious that Becca would never become pregnant. The elated Will, the president of Montford University, is as stunned as Becca is. However, Becca, who anticipated menopause, feels too old to start with the diaper brigade even as the townsfolk rally to help one of the kindest residents adjust.

BECCA'S BABY is a warm humanistic tale that takes the audience inside the head and heart of the title character. The secondary cast including Will augments the tale through their interactions with Becca. However, Becca will charm the audience as she psychologically and emotionally struggles with a radically unexpected change. She owns this novel. Tara Taylor Quinn provides a robust character study that may seem "un" romantic at first glimpse but remains worth reading by anyone who enjoys a fabulous look at the human psyche.

Quinn has done better.

Becca’s Baby is the first book in the Shelter Valley Stories series by American author, Tara Taylor Quinn. After years of trying, when she has finally given up all hope, Becca Parsons falls pregnant at the age of forty-two. Her husband, Will is overjoyed, but puzzled by Becca’s strangely lukewarm reaction and shocked when she talks of termination. The strong loving relationship between them suffers, but the support of close family and the Shelter Valley community helps them come to terms with decisions they both need to make. Sub-plots involve a colleague of Will’s whose behaviour warrants censure and a prospective colleague who is removing her sister from an abusive relationship. Quinn touches on several issues: late-in-life pregnancy, adultery, domestic violence, parental sexual abuse and student-teacher relationships. While this could have been a sweet romance, there is rather too much soul-searching on the part of the main characters, enough to make the reader want to shake them and tell them to stop being so self-indulgent and get on with life. Quinn has done better.

This one was a little heartbreaking for me... but was so happy for the end results. I'm not much of the softy side of things but I'm telling ya, this one got to me. A great summer read!

Hmmm

Sad that the fire In Elena was quenched too soon. Could have been so much better if longer. Courting could be longer and way more development. I gave it 2.5 stars for the female mc other than that sad. The story line needs to be developed more. Grammatical errors and missing words but I didn't rate that.

Super steamy, super hot, and a great follow-up book after Gemini. Aliens are invading earth, but not for the typical reasons. Earth is at the center of a universal war, and it's up to the leading families to save it. If you love menage MFM romances, quick steamy reads, with paranormal aspects, definitely add the Lords of Astria to your library!

Interesting premise, save the galaxy 2 hot aliens at a time.

The h started out fiery but there was intergalactic sex to be had. There were some formatting issues. The fist half had double spacing between the paragraphs and then switched to normal spacing. I'm not a fan of ending a chapter with a "she couldn't believe what she saw..." type prompt. I think almost every chapter ended with an ellipses.

Indispensible for Understanding How the Media and Science Interact

Dorothy Nelkin was one of the premier "field" sociologists of science during the past 35 years, until her untimely death in 2003. She studied and wrote abundantly about the most intense science controversies of the post-war era: nuclear power, military research, foetal and DNA research, genetic modification, and much more. As part of this work, she was constantly involved in observing and analyzing how the media, as the most public forms of knowledge transfer, handled the different sides in any debate and how the knowledge itself was represented. Her book "Selling Science" comes directly out of this experience, and it is sobering. Nelkin shows how the style and information needs of the news media (as well as its logistical demands) differ profoundly from those for scientists, leading to perceptions and realities of misrepresentation.

No scientist who deals with the media should be without this book. Its examples are dated (from the late 80s and early 90s), but its points remain wholly intact. The recent scandal of how the media handled the climate change issue in the U.S., favoring ideas of "uncertainty" in the name of "balance" (while being deeply influenced by a tiny but vocal minority of global warming deniers) is certainly a case in point.

The book should also be read by all students of media studies, and by journalists themselves.

About the Author
C. W. Watson is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Kent at Canterbury where he has taught for the past twenty years. Prior to that he worked in universities in Malaysia and Indonesia. Having moved into social anthropology from an education in arts and letters he has always tried to employ a multidisciplinary perspective in pursuing his research which ranges from studies of Islamic politics in Indonesia to theoretical analyses of ethnography. His doctoral research was on kinship and property among the Kerinci people of the highlands of central Sumatra. His latest book is Of Self and Nation: Autobiographical Representations of Indonesia (2000).

Tough but worthwhile read

This is a great book, but about a difficult subject, extreme poverty as existed in London in the late 19th century. There are many paralells with the present. A must-read for anyone interested in social history and change. London is always an engaging writer.

Seems "the poor will always be with us!"

The depressing thing is that the kind of poverty so graphically described by London in this book has not been eradicated but exported to the Third World. If - like me - you're from a country like South Africa, it'll seem like you're reading about your own current reality.

If novelistic brilliance is your thing, this book will surely float your boat, as Jack London is superb in conveying the sheer horror of life for the working class in early 20th century UK. As we now know, 2 world wars, US aid and colonial exploitation succeeded in raising Western standards of living in most of the last few decades - something that neoliberalism has done much to reverse today.

Unlike Engels in his classic "The Conditions of the Working Class," London did not propose a political solution but was convinced that the problem was solvable, since "mismanagement" was seen as the root cause. Naive perhaps, but that was hardly the point. This book has survived because of its literary merit - the immediacy and pathos that London evokes. Read it, you will be the better for it.

I have quite a few books on surface design, dyeing and so on, but found this book well worth buying, unlike the previous reviewer. After all, how many NEW techniques are there? The photos are sumptuous and eyecatching, techniques are well-summarised, and there were ideas in there that I haven't tried before. A good buy as far as I'm concerned.

Jonathan Moffatt is a retired teacher from England. Audrey Holmes McCormick is a freelance journalist and television presenter from Scotland. They are the acknowledged experts on the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and Royal Marines in Malaya.

Flawed History

This book is fun to read, but on a closer reading I find it unacceptably flawed. The authors rely heavily on first-hand anecdotes, and whilst this can make for lively reading, it is not good history if no trouble has been taken to make sure that an anecdote is anything more than a platform for the storyteller to become the star of his own show.
As an example, we get about a third of a page relating to an incident about boots, over which a man has been harboring a grievance for some fifty years. In the process of telling his story, he maligns his company commander. But the officer is never given a chance to tell another side of the story. This same man later accuses the same officer of hysteria and cowardice, but once again, the officer is given no voice in the matter. The fact that the officer in question (Major Robert Kennard) was mentioned in dispatches and won the Military Cross would suggest that he was a rather better man than his loquacious accuser suggests. In the hands of a better historian and a more able and conscientious editor, stories like this would have been weeded out, which would have made for a better and more reliable book. A historian should insist on nothing less than the fullest, and most comprehensive, balanced research. This book falls sadly short of those ideals.

A tale of courage and sacrifice

A well written narrative about the British troops fighting overwhelming Japanese forces as they withdraw into Singapore. Extraordinarily detailed and strong in the oral tradition of history. Plain to see that years of research and documentation gives the real truth of what happened on the front lines as the British Empire collapsed in Malaya. Authors also give vivid accounts of the prisoners used as slaves by the Japanese on the infamous "Death Railway." One can readily see the day by day account as these gallant men fought and died... and then were abandoned and falsely maligned by their country's leaders.
