Print, Pattern & Colour

I have quite a few books on surface design, dyeing and so on, but found this book well worth buying, unlike the previous reviewer. After all, how many NEW techniques are there? The photos are sumptuous and eyecatching, techniques are well-summarised, and there were ideas in there that I haven't tried before. A good buy as far as I'm concerned.

What really happened in Singapore and Malaya during the dark days of December 1941 to February 1942? Britain’s worst military disaster is looked at here in a new light using firsthand accounts from the men on the ground. Their story is told for the first time and is conclusive proof that some British soldiers did fight the enemy and, in fact, held them back for long enough to enable many to escape from Singapore to fight another day. The accusation that British soldiers in Malaya did not fight is put in its proper context for the first time.

Flawed History
By Two Bears
This book is fun to read, but on a closer reading I find it unacceptably flawed. The authors rely heavily on first-hand anecdotes, and whilst this can make for lively reading, it is not good history if no trouble has been taken to make sure that an anecdote is anything more than a platform for the storyteller to become the star of his own show.
As an example, we get about a third of a page relating to an incident about boots, over which a man has been harboring a grievance for some fifty years. In the process of telling his story, he maligns his company commander. But the officer is never given a chance to tell another side of the story. This same man later accuses the same officer of hysteria and cowardice, but once again, the officer is given no voice in the matter. The fact that the officer in question (Major Robert Kennard) was mentioned in dispatches and won the Military Cross would suggest that he was a rather better man than his loquacious accuser suggests. In the hands of a better historian and a more able and conscientious editor, stories like this would have been weeded out, which would have made for a better and more reliable book. A historian should insist on nothing less than the fullest, and most comprehensive, balanced research. This book falls sadly short of those ideals.

A tale of courage and sacrifice
By Roger Mansell
A well written narrative about the British troops fighting overwhelming Japanese forces as they withdraw into Singapore. Extraordinarily detailed and strong in the oral tradition of history. Plain to see that years of research and documentation gives the real truth of what happened on the front lines as the British Empire collapsed in Malaya. Authors also give vivid accounts of the prisoners used as slaves by the Japanese on the infamous "Death Railway." One can readily see the day by day account as these gallant men fought and died... and then were abandoned and falsely maligned by their country's leaders.

How far would you go to survive?

In FIRE & FLOOD, Tella Holloway faced a dangerous trek through the jungle and a terrifying march across the desert, all to remain a Contender in the Brimstone Bleed for a chance at obtaining the Cure for her brother. She can't stop - and in SALT & STONE, Tella will have to face the unseen dangers of the ocean, the breathless cold of a mountain, and twisted new rules in the race.

But what if the danger is deeper than that? How do you know who to trust when everyone's keeping secrets? What do you do when the person you'd relied on most suddenly isn't there for support? How do you weigh one life against another?

The race is coming to an end, and Tella is running out of time, resources, and strength. At the beginning of the race there were one hundred twenty-two Contenders. As Tella and her remaining friends start the fourth and final part of the race, just forty-one are left . . . and only one can win.

Review
Praise for FIRE & FLOOD:

"Scott holds her own in attitude and taut action, and Tella's voice is feminine, smart, and sassy. Importantly, although male-female chemistry is definitely present, the emotional drive of the novel doesn't rely on romance. Family, camaraderie, and Tella's bond with her furry Pandora companion matter just as much in getting her through the first part of her life-and-death race."
- Publishers Weekly

"Non-stop action and thrilling adventure will keep readers turning the pages. . . . Scott captures the essence of what it means to sacrifice one's self for a loved one."
- VOYA

"Tella is an especially strong and likable character, which makes this gripping adventure all the more enjoyable."
- Booklist

Salt & Stone by Victoria Scott
Book Two of the Fire & Flood series
Publisher: Scholastic
Publication Date: February 24, 2015
Rating: 4 stars
Source: ARC sent by the publisher

Summary (from Goodreads):

How far would you go to survive?

In FIRE & FLOOD, Tella Holloway faced a dangerous trek through the jungle and a terrifying march across the desert, all to remain a Contender in the Brimstone Bleed for a chance at obtaining the Cure for her brother. She can't stop--and in SALT & STONE, Tella will have to face the unseen dangers of the ocean, the breathless cold of a mountain, and twisted new rules in the race.

But what if the danger is deeper than that? How do you know who to trust when everyone's keeping secrets? What do you do when the person you'd relied on most suddenly isn't there for support? How do you weigh one life against another?

The race is coming to an end, and Tella is running out of time, resources, and strength. At the beginning of the race there were 122 Contenders. As Tella and her remaining friends start the fourth and final part of the race, just forty-one are left...and only one can win.

Victoria Scott's stunning thriller will leave readers' hearts racing!

What I Liked:

I really like Victoria Scott's books. I read (and enjoyed) the Dante Walker trilogy, and Fire & Flood, so I had a good feeling about this book. Thank goodness the sequel was not only NOT a victim of the sequel slump - but it was better than the first book (in my opinion)!

Tella and the other Contenders have crossed the jungle and desert - and now, the ocean and mountain waits for them. As she and her group go farther into the Brimstone Bleed, tensions run higher. The terrains get more dangerous and treacherous. Trust is a fragile thing, and Tella must reassess who she can trust and who she should be wary of, all the while, trying to survive and obtain the Cure for her brother.

There is a lot of internal struggling in this book, as well as man vs. nature, and man vs. man. Tella doesn't know if she can trust the new members of the existing group formed in book one. Cotton, a boy who joins them in the ocean terrain, is very strange, but not like Dink (in Fire & Flood). Willow is a girl that also joins them in the ocean terrain, and she is also a bit odd. Tella wants to trust the current members in her group - Braun, Olivia, Guy, etc. - but a group is always difficult to control.

There is also a struggle between Guy and Tella. Guy has not touched Tella since telling her about his goal of taking down the Brimstone Bleed. Guy is also a hugeee alpha male, and like to boss everyone around. However, Tella is quite intelligent, even if she hasn't had training like Guy has. Tella wants to dictate orders to the group, but Guy shoots her down a lot. This would have irked me more except that while Tella IS intelligent, I'd say that Guy is more so (in terms of the Brimstone Bleed). He's not always right (as he quickly learns at one point), but he is clever.

I liked Tella more in this book. I felt like I could connect with her more - maybe because it quickly became apparent that our personalities are similar. She's very girly (which I'm not necessarily), she's very kindhearted (which I'd like to say that I am), and she's pretty selfless when it comes to humans OR Pandoras. I remember thinking to myself at certain scenes, I would have done the same exact thing. Like with Oz the Pandora (he's a new one). On several occasions, I would have felt really bad for him too, and done certain things.

There are many, many secondary characters, and I really liked all of them! Even the weird ones, like Cotton and Willow. I still can't really figure out Willow, or Olivia. The two of them don't really get along, it seems. I can't remember how I felt about Harper in Fire & Flood, but I liked her in this book. She's very direct and gutsy.

The romance is there, it's not, it is. There is NO love triangle, and throughout the two books, no insta-love. I really like Guy, and I really like Tella, and I really like how their relationship is developing. They are slowly learning to trust each other, lean on each other, cede to each other. Tella wants Guy to let her make decisions, and she wants him to express how he feels about her. Guy wants Tella to be safe. Towards the end of this book, things really click between these two. But they totally have a love/hate thing going on, and it definitely leads to some steamy scenes.

I loved the plot in this book, the story. I feel like more things happen in this book, more death, more craziness, more Pandora action, more high stakes. Which is great, because Fire & Flood already had these things! I could not have guessed what would happen at different points throughout the book. I could not have predicted the ending. Oh my gosh, the ending. I seriously hope there will be a third book in the series, because this series CANNOT end the way it did with this book!

What I Did Not Like:

While the author definitely amps up the tension and stakes and creativity of the world and story, there are definitely more Hunger Games similarities in this book. Like, for example, there are people betting on the Contenders, which they didn't know, going into the Brimstone Bleed. This is similar to the contestants in The Hunger Games having sponsors (or something like that). There are similarities, but not enough for me to be all like OMG THIS IS BASICALLY THE HUNGER GAMES. Because that's not what's happening.

Would I Recommend It:

If you enjoyed Fire & Flood, then I think you'll definitely enjoy this book! Personally, I thought it was better than Fire & Flood, and I know others have thought that as well. Especially others who didn't even like Fire & Flood, but liked Salt & Stone a lot. So, that's saying something!

Rating:

4 stars. I hope there will be another book in the series. I want more!

A thrilling sequel that lacked the power of the first...
By Alicia
4 Stars

SALT & STONE was a high stake race through two ecosystems that produced heart-pounding, action-packed adventure, to save the one you love. With it's combined thrilling determination for survival and the racing fast-paced plot, SALT & STONE sped though the pages and into a tangled web of conspiracies, lies, murder, survival, and a determination to endure the unthinkable to save the one you love!!!

SALT & STONE was a fun second installment with thrills and chills that kept your heart pumping in anticipation. I enjoyed this follow up a lot, but not as much as the first book, FIRE & FLOOD. The first book was off the hook EPIC!!! I loved it so much and it was definitely one of my favorite book last year. But sadly, SALT & STONE did not reach that same level of excitement for me, but it was still good nevertheless.

LET ME TRY TO EXPLAIN WHY...

I was ready for the crazy, unthinkable, mind blowing obstacles and earth moving revelations, and for the bottom to fall out of this series at alarming rate. But I didn't get any of that from SALT & STONE. From all the epic awesomeness that FIRE & FLOOD brought, my expectations were sky high, probably a little too high. But like I said above, I still did enjoy it a lot, but not no where near as much as I'd hoped for.

SALT & STONE felt lacking in the romance department. Unlike book one where the romance between Tella and Guy was hands shaking, spine tingling, and mind blowing. In SALT & STONE Tella and Guy argued most of the time and where at odds over every little thing. And it was annoying and so dam stupid what they were arguing over. It was like they were wrestling for control and leadership, when they both could of just put their childish differences aside and worked together. Granted, Tella was trying to find herself through all of this, and felt her only reason for making it as far as she did was because of Guy. But it wasn't his fault she was going through life-changing issues, and she didn't have to take it all out on him and be such a bit*h about it. Guy was only trying to take care of the one he loves and support her through it all. But it did get a lot better on that aspect towards the end of the book when Tella started to understand and accept who she truly was. I guess it was a necessary growth they had to go through to get to where they're at in the end. But I just didn't like the way it was done, and all the negativity and bad blood between them in the process.

Then the action was another let down I had with this book. It was definitely there, and it was good, but it wasn't at all like I'd hoped for. I just wanted more from it all; I wanted more answers then what I got, I wanted more drama in the plot, I wanted more obstacles and hardships for the characters, I just wanted and expected more from SALT & STONE, if that makes any since at all?? I guess it was my fault for having such high expectations from the beginning. If I wouldn't of expected so much from it, then I wouldn't of been let down like I was, and I even might of loved it. But nevertheless, it was still a fun ride that I enjoyed!

THE PLOT

Tella's made it through two of four legs of the race, enduring the harsh and dangerous environments that only get harder and more deadly with each ecosystems she encounters. But so far she's survived through it all, she has let nothing tear her down, though from time to time she's had more then a few near death experiences, but she still succeeded every time. And this time, she's stronger, harder, and more determined then ever. She's prepared to follow through with any and all of the Brimstone Bleed's insane plots and deadly antics that they will most definitely have in store for them. And she's ready for anything, she's ready to go down fighting...

The numbers of the competitors are dwindling with each leg of the race, and the environment is getting harsher then any she's been through, but with her group at her side, and her Pandora's close by, Tella's ready for anything, or is she...

The Brimstone Bleed has bended their rules to fit their insane little game, and Tella just so happens to be their unknowing and unwilling star. But she's struggling with herself and her dependence on Guy, and wonders if she's strong enough for this race, and questions if she would of made it this far without him. But all of that becomes an after thought when the race starts to speed up with the end in sight, but with only one capable winner, and everyone out to be that champion, everything starts to become an onslaught of desperation. But what are they really willing to do in order to be that last man standing and win the Cure for their loved one? Are they willing to lie, cheat, betray, and even murder to get what the want, and if so, doesn't that make them just as guilty as the Brimstone bleed??

Tella will have to go through unthinkable hardships while discovering who she is and what she's actually capable of, all while determining if she really is strong enough to survive this race, and if so, how far is she willing to go to be the first one over the finish line??

SALT & STONE was a great finish to the race, though not what I expected and not as much action and interaction with the other contenders as I hoped for. BUT... still, it was great, and I enjoyed a lot of the test, obstacles, and the harsh and deadly ecosystems that Tella and the rest of the team went through! And THAT ENDING!!!! OMG, I kinda had a clue as too what was going to happen, and who was going to win, but when it finally did played out, GOODNESS, IT . WAS . TORTURE!!!!

Overall, SALT & STONE didn't live up to it's predecessor in my opinion, but still added it's own exciting, nice touch to this series! I enjoyed it, though not a much as I hoped, but still enough to keep me reading until the very ending to see how everything plays out, because that cliffhanger ending was crazy torture!!!. I think this is a great series and definitely do recommended it to fans of dystopia and survival, you will find this series right up your alley!!!

NOTE: I received a Physical ARC from Scholastic Press for reviewing purposes! All opinions express are my own and are not influenced in any way!

Books of Love Book Review: Salt and Stone by Victoria Scott
By Grace M. Fonseca
Totally intense and riveting sequel that has you guessing what will happen. I was blown away by how intense and dangerous things get in this book. Plus the competition and the challengers all want to save their loved ones. Tella has to make some hard decisions during the course of this book and this is something that makes you love Tella more.

Tella and company have made it to a certain point. Yet Tella has collected some Pandora’s and is using them in a way that makes some people nervous. Plus to see that there are reasons certain competitors are back. This was surprising to say the least. There are big revelations about the people who are running the Brimstone Bleed. Everyone wants to save their loved one. You can understand why people are willing to do anything. The stakes get raised so big in this book that there’s some incredible challenges and trials. We also learn that Cotton has a brother. This brother has taken his place in the race.

There are reasons for the challenges. These trials or competitions are downright deadly at times. At times i thought that Tella could have died or everyone could. You actually have grown to love these characters, so when one dies or bites the dust, it’s like a piece of your heart has been ripped out. I really felt this emotion strongly through out the whole entire book. I also felt at times people didn’t really give Tella enough credit. She proves that through out the challenges and other things that are given to her, Tella is stronger than most people think. I think her caring is what keeps her likable as a character.

As you get to the last part of this book, the ending totally is a mind blowing experience. You utterly feel for Tella. I felt like there is so much more to this story to come even after everything she has been through. Not to mention, the way she comes to a realization. Tella will never be done fighting for her brother. She will find a way. I must say that I like her determination.

The Biggest Surprise Since the Cubs Missed the Pennant
By A Customer
This excellent exposition of FDR's relations with the Soviet Union makes us think... of the obvious. We think of Saddam defying the civilized world, we think of North Vietnam using the Kissinger treaty to overrun the south, we think of Anna Nicole with a case of Nesquick--Franklin would certainly try to charm Stalin and he would lose. That America tried to shmooz the communists instead of confront them certanly prolonged the cold war. If Frankin had not thought he could grin the reds into an decent deal, millions would have been free sooner. Crocker gives us Roosevelt's idiotic attempt at such idiocy a full hearing, and finds him a jackass.

Breaking Point, by Suzy Spencer

From the New York Times bestselling author of THE FORTUNE HUNTER

Andrea Yates, a suburban Houston mother of five, horrified the nation on June 20, 2001, when she dialed 911 and said, "I killed my children."

While her husband Rusty, a NASA engineer, was at work, Andrea filled the family bathtub with water and systematically drowned their children, ages six months to seven years. As her eldest child lay lifeless in the bathtub and the bodies of her four youngest rested in her bed, Andrea, a devoted Christian wife and former nurse, called the police to confess her sin.

The investigations by the prosecutors, by the defense, and by the press delved deeper into Andrea’s mind and history, revealing a disturbing web of suicidal tendencies, depression, and psychoses. While her husband struggled between his overwhelming grief and his loyalty to his incarcerated wife, an outraged nation asked one question after another: How could anyone do this? What would drive a mother to kill her children?

Drawing from hundreds of hours of interviews, court testimony, and medical records, including new access to psychiatric and legal files, BREAKING POINT traces the story of an all-American family struggling with the darkness of a mental illness that twisted a loving mother into a killer obsessed with hellfire.

"BREAKING POINT is a truly spellbinding read."—Aphrodite Jones, bestselling author of CRUEL SACRIFICE

“Suzy Spencer weaves the dark threads of mental illness, infanticide, and punishment into a classic true-crime tapestry that is both thorough and gut-wrenching.”—Ron Franscell, bestselling author of THE DARKEST NIGHT

This new edition of BREAKING POINT has been updated throughout.

SPENCER'S "BREAKING POINT" REINFORCES HER REPUTATION AS ONE OF AMERICA'S BEST TRUE CRIME WRITERS.
By Legendary Burl Barer
Suzy Spencer first came to my attention about seven years ago, and I was immediately impressed by the dynamic foreword motion of her narratives coupled with her ability to set the scene of events without belaboring every physical nuance from outdoor environment to details of window shades -- she knows how to capture your attention, and most importantly, tell the story. Her BREAKING POINT goes beyond the superficial coverage inherent in the limited word count of newspaper stories, or the soundbite analysis of infotainment disguised as news. Spencer gets into the heart and soul of every story she investigates, and brings, dare I say it, a "spiritual sensitivity" to the complexities of human existence. Mental illnesses are medical condition whether the result of in utero virus, injury or heredity. Sadly, recent research found that more Americans believe that evil acts are caused by invisible demons from hell than believe in medical diagnosis and treatment for mental health conditions. Spencer has a perceptive eye, a kind heart, and, if the atheists amongst us will pardon the phrase,God given talent. Her literary abilities and personal sensitivity make her updated retelling of Andrea Yates' "BREAKING POINT" a definite addition to everyone's true crime non-fiction library.

Highly recommended-a true crime must-read!
By True Murder
Investigative journalist Suzy Spencer's definitive book about one of the most important trials in American history and a cautionary tale about mental illness. Impossible to ignore this is a unforgettable story starring a hysterical public, a blood-thirsty prosecution and a family destroyed. Highly recommended!

At last....Understanding
By Leslie
Well written for helping understand so often misunderstood mental illness.
Intriguing and interesting although heartbreaking Needed to be told as an awareness and warning to be ever vigilant of children whose parents are mentally unstable.

All this talk of disease...
By Nick
For everyone who is interested in this book, let it first be said that I think many people interested and involved in the deaf community would find it appaling that deafness is being treated as a "sin" or and "error" in humans. While not all people may agree with me on this point, I think it is very important to watch your comments when referring to these books. While Van Cleve uses historical analysis in his work, it fails to account for any positive deaf cultured view of the situation. Those involved in this culture will tell you that deafness is not a disease or a problem, but part of a human being, and Van Cleve fails to recognize this point, and therefore fails in any attempt to empower the Deaf Community. Whether or not this was his attempt is not as important. We all must be aware of the fact that some people are happy how they are. They dont want their deafness "treated" or "cured" becuase it can't be - it is as much a part of them as your eye color.

A Place of Their Own: Creating the Deaf Community in America
By J. L. Snider
As a student of American Sign Language and the Deaf community I have read many books on the subject. A Place of Their Own: Creating the Deaf Comminity in America is an excellent book in which to find details that you just don't find in many other places. It covers Deaf history, the people and places that influenced the Deaf community and the reasons for the importance of the Deaf community. This isn't a book that promotes or promises a "Utopian Deafland" it gives a realistic look at the the lives of Deaf people throughout history. As a textbook, this is an excellent learning tool for anyone. It belongs in the home of every Deaf person, every person with a Deaf family member and the home of every person that knows anyone who is Deaf. It would be a nice thing for any hearing person that doesn't know any Deaf people to help create an understanting of a community they are not likely familiar with. An excellent and easy read. I highly recommend it.

Excellent book on the cultural/social history of the deaf
By A Customer
For a long time I have been searching for such book like this! It is excellent resources for the people, who are interested to learn American Sign Language, to become aware of richly deaf cultural/social history. The authors know where to find such wealthy of information, yet their writings are brevity along with several examples of where the deaf people have been interacted in order to preserve their cultural-linguistic connections. I highly recommended this book to the education and medical personnel to see how the deaf people are evidently happy with their livings without being heavily corrected on their hearing loss.
