The first real chapters to "The Old Man and the Sea". Read them together to understand.

Not Hemingway's best, but still Hemingway. I highly recommend reading along with Bruce Greenwood on the audio version. And finally, read "The Old Man and the Sea" immediately after you finish. It really is the last chapter of this book that was split off as a novella and won the Nobel prize. Once you realize that the "old man" IS Thomas Hudson, both books take on an entirely new meaning. Especially with the chapter about Hudson's son reeling in the lost fish in "Islands" as compared to Hudsons fight with the Marlin in "Old Man". It may ramble a bit in parts, but there is some true genius within. Trust me on this.

This is my all-time favorite book. I can read it 100 times and I'm always thrilled. Hemingway is a master. His descriptions of life and fishing in particular are intense and enthralling. The true mark of a classic.

HISTORY LESSON

The theme of this book is quite simple: that HOMO SAPIEN means "wise man", but that a look at the history of man reveals him to be anything but. This tome is harsh & elitist to the max, but GBL parts company with his contemporaries in this mileau by basing his notion of elitism purely on intelligence & achievement. "Cream always rises to the top" he observes, & every ethnic group will have a handful of natural born leaders who will excel in everything, & an excess of those who Stalin refered to as "the stuffing in the mattress". Still, many readers will find this a bitter pill to swallow. Even though he avoids the usual sweeping generalizations based on race, a lot of "stuffing"-types may not like what he has to say.

Sobering, erudite and brilliant writing. Not for the faint of heart, or for the vast majority of people.

First things first, and the description of this book should give it away but it bears being said again. This book is not for the faint of heart, this should be obvious if you are thinking of purchasing this book as Lorentz has written a text which is red hot in its honesty and presentation of how s***ty human beings really are and that a very rare percentage of us are actually deserving of the title of sapiens (wise.), and even then those who demonstrate this are not without their imbecile flaws.
Lorentz has written an erudite and sobering book, that would make even Christopher Hitchens blush, which if you are a fan of Hitchens I find it very likely that you will enjoy this book.
What Lorentz does in this text, if it isn't obvious is works through many of the broad facets which have constituted human civilization from our inception and has stayed with us to this day, and points out that what humans really are, are apex predators which take the greatest glory in our instinctual predation of everything which we can prey upon, and has for centuries continuing into today and most certainly the future. That we have developed the ability to be hypocrites in the face of our own injustices that pale even the biblical myths of the Abrahamic.
Now in my opinion there are three ways that a person will most likely view this book. One, they will read it, be disgusted by it, and continue down a path they were already on, of stating daily positive affirmations, and saying that the root of our problems can all be solved by emanating positivity like a new age guru. The second, will be the other end of the spectrum, those that will see this work as affirming proof that we human hedonistic predators are good at sucking, and that you should trust no one and care only for yourself. The third, will take a middle of the road approach to this, now let preface all of the above by saying, that I don't view any of these three is being necessarily better than the others. I am not proud to consider myself a human being in light of our past and current present, but with that being said, the amount of personal responsibility and self-realization that can be awakened by writing such as this, when in the right hands, cannot be under estimated in the least.
In my mind this book is worth every penny to purchase it, and hearty thanks to Underworld Amusements and APOP records for making such an erudite and sobering text easily available.

THE MOST OBSCURE BOOK OF THE 20TH CENTURY BACK IN PRINT!

I think it was the early 80s when a man named Lorenz self-published his magnum opus "HOMO, & 44/100% NON SAPIEN". it was a scathing inditement of humanity. his point was that homo sapien means "wise man"--- and that humans are ANYTHING but wise.

I found my copy on a remaindered table in an SF bookstore shortly after its release. it was selling for 99 cents. part way through it, I went back & bought every copy they had, handing them off to everyone I thought might get it. gave one to anton la vey, who deemed lorenz "the jewish ragnar redbeard".

I made a few attempts to get it republished myself, even calling the author (he lived in a small town in nevada), but to no avail. he was a bitter angry old man who trusted no one. don't blame him.

I haven't looked at this book in 25 years & can't find my copy, but remember it with fondness... as being wildly misanthropic & hilarious. albeit grim. I am informed that it can be ordered via APOP RECORDS, & that my copy is in the post already.
