I really liked the book - it is too short at 46 pages for 1.99

I try not to think about how short this was. I knew how long it was going into the book. BUT oh what an awesome book it could have been.

Jackie - she's well, I really don't know how to explain her. There wasn't enough about her in the book. She could have been anyone. And the big plot was her brother died by Zane's hand. She was mad that Zane had murdered him, but it really didn't say anything about her brother's relationship to her. And I mean nothing. The reader doesn't know if she liked him. If he played with her when she was young. If he was abusive to her... You get the picture. She doesn't seem sad that he died.

Zane - Well I just loved Zane. He carried the book. We learn quite a bit about his background. But... As you've noticed, I'm saying... We could have heard more. How did he get to be a great tracker? What did happen when Jackie's brother died - from Zane's point of view.

The love story - Ummm... There isn't one. Eventually Jackie just loves Zane because her wolf does. And she sees him fight and things he probably murdered her brother in self defense.

Another thing that bugged me. When referring to Zane when he is a wolf. The text would say "Zane Wolf". So OK we know he's a wolf so why not just say Zane?

I did buy the rest of the books in the series. Even though they are short without enough details and story, I liked them enough to want to read more.

Again, not a bad read, but shorter than the first book. This was truly an underwolf (sorry fur the pun) story. Lots of hot sex too!

So disappointing.

The first book was short and felt a little rushed, but was mostly a great book so I had expectations for this book to be better. The summary was intriguing but the actual book? It was choppy, sloppy, rushed. The sex scenes struck me as quantity over quality and the supposed plot twists and the new characters in this book were forced. The only well written areas of the book were the ones including Lucien and his mate (NOT including the birth scene at the end which was once again sloppy and forced) Glad this book was only 0.99 but that is still too much money. This book needs a SERIOUS overhall. Will give this series one more chance and I WILL be returning this book if I can.

A fine new version of an old classic.

Every G.I. Joe fan worth their cut-out trading cards knows about Marvel's issue 21 of the G.I. Joe comic book, presented without a single thought or word bubble done partially for artistic merit and partially because the issue was running behind schedule. Carrie Vaughn takes a pass at the plot of the silent issue with an additional hook: it is now told entirely from the perspective of the story's anonymous captive, named Lena Amari by Vaughn. Revealed to be an American diplomat, she relates the circumstances of her rescue by Scarlett and Snake Eyes in first person, providing a perspective that fleshes out the original story and provides much needed realism to the G.I. Joe premise. Upon being captured, Lena does not immediately suspect Cobra, as there are many other potential suspects in the near-East, and she often wonders about how a Terrorist organization like Cobra can manage to tag so many red snake logos on everything. The overall story doesn't follow the original comic completely, but as the comic is already written and acclaimed enough that an alternate take like the one by Vaughn can be just as appreciated. This is a fantastic short story. totally recommended.

I've been a fan of GI JOE since I was a little kid. So a few years ago... No really, it's been a long time. What I enjoyed about this story is that it brings those characters back into my life and it gives them a fresh story that lives and breathes. In comics and cartoons you only get the surface. In stories like this one you get the deeper story with all the same bells and whistles of technicolor action

Harrison (Legends of the Fall) has over decades won a durable following for verse and fiction about the wild places, solitudes and the exhilarations of the American West. This 12th book of verse gives familiar, quotable rural pleasures—solitude, ease, forests and big skies—along with a new focus on the poet's advancing years. I keep waiting without knowing/ what I'm waiting for, Harrison says in Age Sixty-Nine; in that waiting, he adds, on local earth my heart/ is at rest as a groundling. In low-pressure free verse, and in the prose poems that make up half the volume, Western American landscapes and beasts soar and roam off the page. (Mexican places and people, unfortunately, do not: they are leaden stereotypes.) People, for Harrison, are beasts as well, marine organisms at the bottom of the ocean/ of air. Paying homage to instinct, loyalty, memory and a companionable ferocity, Harrison finds his best subjects, often enough, in dogs. I know dog language fairly well, he explains, but then dogs hold a little back from us because we don't know their secret names given them by the dog gods. Barking brings the poet closer to the canine kingdom still: I was a dog on a short chain, he complains, and now there's no chain. (Apr.)

A Quintessential American Poet

The late Harrison is, as always, the quintessential American poet. The simplicity of Hemingway dances with the roughness of Raymond Carver and the childlike wonder of Mary Oliver. Jim Harrison was a true master and has become one of my most evident inspirations and favorite writers.

The Natural World

Jim Harrison conveys a love and deep appreciation of nature. His novellas, novels, memoirs and poems all are steeped in his life-long passion for being outside. His "thicket" paradise-- alone basking in the wonder an un-named creek somewhere in N.America--gives him the inspiration to write like no one else.
If you love this realm of pure nature, and our place in it, you will love his books.

His prose poems range from the hysterically funny -- like his impersonating a famous physiologist to gain access to the world's fastest female runner -- to the stream-of-consciousness style of "Advice." Those small gods of daily life are exposed again and again in this book. Harrison has done the searching for us.
