E. ANN KAPLAN is a distinguished professor of English and Cultural Analysis and Theory at Stony Brook University, where she also founded and directed the Humanities Institute. I've been reading a lot of books around the subject of climate change, and some others that treat the subject through literary/film criticism. I wouldn't put this in the first rank, but there are several very strong points to Kaplan's book. First, I think Kaplan's feminist readings of the dystopian novels and films here is generally on the money: it's very much worth noting the differences male and female, and US and non-US, artists have in imagining apocalyptic futures. Her personal account, in the introduction, of her experience as a resident of lower Manhattan in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, poignantly sets up her notion of "pre-traumatic stress," which is potentially valuable as a tool to think with. And her conclusion, where she sketches out the distinction between melancholy and mourning (in Freudian and existentialist terms) as responses to climate change, is particularly recommended

Charting the evolution of the port cities of Atlantic Spain and Portugal over four centuries, this book examines the often dynamic interaction between the large privileged ports of Lisbon, Seville and Cadiz (the Metropoles) and the smaller ports of, among others, Oporto, Corunna and Santander (the Second Tier). The book particularly focuses on the implications of state-sponsored commercial policies for the main ports of Atlantic Iberia during the monopoly period extending from 1503 to c.1778, and briefly considers the implications of the suppression of monopoly for these centres over the remainder of the nineteenth century.

Patrick O'Flanagan employs a wealth of source material to provide a multi-faceted survey of the growth of these port cities, moving deftly from local concerns to regional developments and global relationships. Beyond Spain and Portugal, the book also considers the important role played by the Atlantic archipelagoes of the Canaries, the Azores and Madeira.

About the Author
Patrick O'Flanagan is a Professor and Head of the Department of Geography at University College Cork, Ireland. Most of his academic career has been spend at this university. He has maintained close links with all of the Atlantic universities on the Iberian peninsula and especially with the university of Santiago de Compostela. He has published widely on the historical and cultural geography of the Iberian peninsula.

About the Author
David P. Marshall co-wrote The Book of Myself: A Do-it-Yourself Autobiography in 221 Questions with his grandfather, Carl Marshall. He is also the co-author, with his wife Kate, of: What I Love About You; The Book of Us: A Journal of Your Love Story in 150 Questions; Picture of Me: Who I Am in 221 Questions; What I Love About You, Mom; and My Life Map: A Journal to Help You Shape Your Future. He lives with his family in northern California.

Carl E. Marshall spent a year writing a memoir about his early, middle and later years. He shared it with his family, which treasured his stories so much that he then worked with his grandson, David Marshall, to create a guided journal for others to write about their life as well. This became The Book of Myself: A Do-it-Yourself Autobiography in 221 Questions. Carl was a professor of Mathematics at Oklahoma State University and was known by his colleagues as "Mr. Statistics of Oklahoma."

This book is monumental...it's a novel waiting to happen!

I gave this book to my grandmother with a note that said "I bought this book for you because I want the generations of our bloodline to come to know that you were a wonderful, generous woman, who knew how to live life to it's fullest." She loved both the book and the note so much she cried! She also went out and bought a few more to give to aother family members as gifts. She wrote in it and gave it to me, and I drank up every word she wrote. I learned about her trials and tribulations, I learned about family members I never had the pleasure of knowing...but got to know well throughout this book. It gave me an idea about where I came from, and I even noticed some similarities in personality and interests with my grandmother. This is a wonderful book for any occasion. Definitly 2 thumbs up!

Got this for a neighbor who's been like a grandma to me. I thought this would be great for her to pass down. She's really into peace not war and protesting. Never had any kids and keeps her lift going strong. I can only imagine the stories she has to tell.
