A quick-guide to being happy (that works)

I rarely re-read books, but this book is highlighted, bookmarked, post-it noted, scribbled in, battered and worn from frequent use. It's 102 pages of practical advice and encouragement to make lists of what makes you happy, what doesn't make you happy, and what you ultimately want for your life. Then it tells you how to keep those goals front and center in your mind on a daily basis, so you don't lose focus. In purely practical terms, I've used this book to help me pay off debt, buy a house, and re-configure my business to work less and make more money (yes, really). I don't read self-help books, but I wouldn't even classify Slaying Dragons in that category. It's more like a quick guide to being happy, and I'm happier for having it on my bookshelf.

A kickstart to a better life

Slaying Dragons and Moving Mountains was really an inspiration and kickstart for me to find meaningful perspective in my life and realize that I, too, can have the type of existence people often only dream of. Sometimes it takes having someone with experience to motivate and break it down for you to see that small actions can lead to large outcomes, and that's exactly what Stefan does in his book - makes greatness feel attainable. And, I'm now successfully inspired to put an action plan together for a future I can, and already do, feel really excited about.

Regardless of who we are or where we are from, all of us strive to be happier. I really liked "Slaying Dragons and Moving Mountains" because it simplified the art of getting happy and making progress in your life. The book has several "Magic Action" sections which really got me thinking. For example, author Stefan asks readers to list what DOESN'T make you happy. He also talks about 3 year, 1 year and 90 day goals which makes progress towards your goals much less intimidating. This is the kind of book anyone can read quickly and leave feeling inspired, ready to take action and, most importantly, worthy of happiness.

I recall having this book assigned when I was an architectural student in the 1980s. I found it invaluable then. I still use it for reference today, some thirty years later. The book was among the first to compile in one comprehensive summary that buildings can be designed to take advantage of natural climate. It has detailed explanation of over 100 climate design practices that can be applied to homes and small scale buildings. The bibliography lists references for building science and climatology dating back to the early 1900s, and thus is invaluable for research. Architects, builders, and anyone interested in energy efficient building design will find this a still useful reference.

In this volume, Nathan Gilbert Quimpo disputes such characterizations of democracy. He argues that the deepening of democracy in the country involves the transformation of an elite-dominated formal democracy into a participatory and egalitarian one. He focuses on emergent, democratically oriented, leftist parties and groups that seek to transform the formal democracy of the Philippines into a more substantial one and shows the difficulties they have encountered in fighting patronage politics. The complexity of the process to deepen democracy in the Philippines becomes evident from Quimpo s exploration of competing notions of democracy, contending versions of the civil society argument, and contending perspectives in governance.

My daughter loved this book. She asked for books about animals for her 7th birthday and we got this and the NG Animal Encyclopedia, and she has been reading it nonstop.
