An Englishman in Madrid, by Eduardo Mendoza

Anthony Whitelands, an English art historian, is invited to Madrid to value an aristocrat's collection. At a welcome lunch he encounters Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera, founder and leader of the Falange, a nationalist party whose antics are bringing the country ever closer to civil war.
The paintings turn out to be worthless, but before Whitelands can leave for London the duque's daughter Paquita reveals a secret and genuine treasure, held for years in the cellars of her ancestral home. Afraid that the duque will cash in his wealth to finance the Falange, the Spanish authorities resolve to keep a close eye on the Englishman, who is also being watched by his own embassy.
As Whitelands--ever the fool for a pretty face--vies with Primo de Rivera for Paquita's affections, he learns of a final interested party: Madrid is crawling with Soviet spies, and Moscow will stop at nothing to secure the hidden prize.

An Englishman in Madrid
By miss.mesmerized
Just shortly before the Spanish Civil War breaks out, the English art expert Anthony Whitelands travels to Madrid for a delicate deal: he is to secretly assess the value of a nobleman’s collection which the duque intends to sell. On his first visit he gets to know the leader of the Falange party and stumbles into the mess the country is in. Caught between his own career interests, the rising love for the duque’s daughter, Spanish and English authorities and rebellious groups, Anthony’s life quickly is at stake and he does not know anymore whom to trust and who to fear.

A very entertaining story which cleverly combines the world of art with wonderful descriptions and explanations with the historic events in Spain in the 1930s and a complicated love affair. What I appreciated most were the passages about Spanish art, the work of Velazquez and the details on how to detect if a piece of art is fake or original. The plot turns more and more complicated the further you read and thus clearly outlines how complex the situation was and which different forced were at work and mixed up in the triggering of the Civil War.

All in all, a demanding combination of different aspects, providing insight into Spanish art and history while narrating a suspenseful story.

History good, story not so
By M. Stipsits
Highlighting Spain in 1936, shortly before the outbreak of World War II with the right-wing vying for political footing against the communists, the story gives some insight into the turbulence of those times and is interesting from that perspective. Unfortunately, the story itself and its characters lack suspense, drive and credibility. The Englishman, an art and especially Velazquez expert, who basically seems a nitwit, beds women left and right and gets caught up in the political and social turmoil of pre-war Madrid without ever really being in danger. It was work reading this book, it didn't go down easy. I must admit, though, that I also enjoyed the Englishman's elaborate artistic and historical description of several paintings. But it wasn't enough for more than 2,5 to 3 stars.

Did not like it at all
By Monique A. H.
I did not enjoy reading this book. Sometimes it was serious and political, then again it was a cheap read. Anthony Whitelands is being described as someone of great character yet he has just ended an affair with his best friends wife, sleeps with a child prostitute and with a young woman(virgin) who is in love with another man. I had no sympathy for this man at all. Certain plots made no sense to me.
