You'll learn about the most powerful (and simple) compassion tool ever!

I love all of Cheri Huber's books, but this is the one that I recommend most to people. Why? Because in this book, she introduces a practice of Recording and Listening that is hands-down the most powerful self-compassion tool I've ever experienced. Using just a recording device and our own voices, we can create loving and encouraging messages for ourselves that are antidotes to the mean and judging messages that loop through most of our minds most of the time. The 30-day workshop in the back of this book leads one through exercises that help us turn our attention to the life we want — and then record about it to anchor in all those insights and compassion.

Here's a quote that I love from the book: "Learning to direct attention to the life experience we choose, a skill essential for 'being in the driver's seat of our own lives ... is literally how we become able to choose happiness."

About the Author

Larry McCabe's credentials include an education degree from the University of Arizona, more than thirty years of music teaching experience, over eighty published music books, columns for Living Blues Magazine and Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine, and authorship of the Roy Clark Fiddle Magic Method and the Roy Clark Bluegrass Banjo Bible.

He plays electric and acoustic blues guitar, clawhammer and three-finger banjo, fiddle, and other string instruments. During his career, he has taught blues guitar lessons, banjo lessons, fiddle lessons, song writing, music theory, music history, and other subjects.

Larry has played in numerous bands including blues, classic country, rockabilly, traditional Irish, and Cajun, and he served on the prestigious W.C. Handy Blues Awards nominating committee for many years. With his wife, Becky, Larry is the owner and publisher of the popular roots music instruction book company Red Dog Music Books.

In the 1990s, he taught History of Jazz Music and History of Popular Music in America courses to adult education students at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. As an amateur WWII historian, Larry collected and edited 160 interviews for his book Pearl Harbor and the American Spirit (2004).

EXCELLENT

An excellent resource for the early intermediate to advanced student, this book is as close to an "instant jazz" approach as you can get. Just listening to the CD alone is a treat, besides knowing that all the information you need to reproduce those sounds are found within the pages of the book.

As with all of Larry's materials the format is great, very user-friendly. The charts go from one page to the next without a lot of talking/writing in between, and the song numbers in the book match the song numbers on the CD, which unfortunately isn't always the case with many publications. There is also a lot of helpful information in the book: theory, chord simplification for beginners, chord subs, and projects for students, just to name a few, but all in it's own section of the book, not sprinkled throughout the book here and there making it impossible to find. The best supplement of all, however, may just be the section entitled "Tailoring the Materials to Your Specific Musical Requirements". After all, isn't that what any self-help, or teach-yourself or student supplement book should aim to do?

Though geared toward students with at least some playing experience, a beginner could confidently tackle some of the progressions in this book with just a basic knowledge of how to read chord diagrams, a bit of left hand dexterity, and some perseverance.

Another great book by Larry McCabe,(as anyone familiar with his materials would agree),and as a full time music instructor I would have to say this is definately one of the better books on the subject. 101 Uptown Jazz Chord Progressions would be a great addition to any music library.

Do I love it? Yeah, but it drives me crazy!

I have always been fascinated by the jazz guitar guys who fly up and down the neck with those short 3 and 4 note chord voicings. I believe it is referred to as "comping". In my mind, this is more important than just the linear single note lead we otherwise hear.(although both are certainly very cool). After working much harder on chord theory and trying to get more familiar with the fretboard I decided I was ready to learn about some of this and I bought Larry's book. I then bought his blues version called "101 Essential Blues Progressions".

McCabe gives a nice, but too short intro on song structure, chord substitution, and how to use his book. He then goes into about 101 different way to play these basic chord progressions.

For me it was like learning guitar all over. Many of the chords are played without a root or a fifth. therefore they look strange to the beginners eye. The names of the chords would sometimes look familiar but playing "Cmaj13" in a 4 note voicing on the 9th fret was new. And so were the other 40+ chords. But I keep doing it and they are becoming familiar - and beautiful. I have to say i have yet to make a song out it, but the skill, dexterity, and chord knowledge are worth learning.

The dollar costs of these books is rarely an issue. The real cost is the time put into it versus other efforts and whether it will yield what we want - to progress our skill and knowledge. This book is work the time and effort, but i wish I had Larry next to me showing how to take it to the next level.
The CD is OK. My player does not go to numbered tracks and so clicking 68 times to get to a selection has gotten old. I don't use the CD much.

Chords could be a little more inventive

Although the progressions were quite good, I was expecting the chord voicings to be a little more inventive than those shown in the book. Chords used are all just using the top four strings.

Jean-Baptiste Onofre is a member of the Apache Software Foundation, and he has been involved in Apache projects for about 10 years. He's the PMC chair of Apache Karaf and its subprojects, including Cellar, Cave, and EIK. He's also a PMC member of Apache ACE, Apache ServiceMix, and Apache Syncope, and he is a committer for Apache ActiveMQ, Apache Archiva, Apache Aries, Apache Camel, and Apache jClouds. He's currently working at Talend (http://www.talend.com) as a software architect and is a member of the Talend Apache team. He has provided articles on Java technologies for GNU/Linux magazine France and has worked as an author and a reviewer on different books, such as Learning Karaf Cellar and Apache Karaf Cookbook, both by Packt Publishing. He has also given talks on Apache projects, such as Karaf and Camel, at different conferences, especially ApacheCon NA and Europe, CamelOne, and so on.

If you care for stream-of-consciousness grade school printed English, pages of (repetitive) listing of pom.xml files, and irritating print with little regard for proper form, use of pronouns or articles, or even trivial editing (e.g. PrefixerProcessor and PrefixerProcesser [sic] appear two lines away from each other [p. 24]), this is your book. The text could be a stenographical transcription of a recorded live classroom session, enriched with pro-forma screen captures of maven build output. A promise of concise explanation implied in the advertised restrained page count is completely squandered with content poorly organized and inadequate to the task of providing a coherent, well-explained introduction organized according to a readily recognizable path. The table of content suggests it might have been (I fell for it), but the implementation is truly disappointing. If you are already fluent in Camel, but dated, this could maybe fill in as a short partial read on the latest about this project, and how to integrate it with the Apache Karaf OSGi container. But then, you would not need an introductory tutorial like this book appear to me it claims to be. Alas, I will have to backtrack and look elsewhere. Caveat emptor, as the book is not that cheap either.

You can pick and chose how in depth you want to be and/or revisit sections later for more in-depth reading. I am finding it very useful for second and third project - refreshing my memory by re-reading specific chapters that apply to my current problem space.

Making SAT Vocab Come to Life

As an academic tutor, I have purchased this book numerous times for my SAT students. Everyone knows SAT vocab can be rather painful--to say the least. Picture These SAT Words helps visual learners not only understand the definition of hard vocabulary words, but also associate each word with a visual cartoon. Each cartoon relates to the sound of its vocabulary word, so retrieving the cartoon from memory becomes relatively easy with word association. I recommend this resource to any student that finds visual association helpful when studying. Some of the cartoons are rather humorous, which never hurts the memorization process!

Efficient memorization

Good list to improve scores. Frequently used SAT words. Definitions are short, straightforward, and easier to memorize than other flash cards. Some of my students really like the pictures, which help them memorize the definitions more efficiently.

Lisa's second book in a new and exciting interactive and above all fun genre, physically larger in size than the previous book this is aimed at couples of all ages and feels good to touch and is certainly a book for sharing with the special people or person in your life but could be a great family opportunity to share thoughts, ideas, dreams and even more serious thought provoking issues perhaps.
it brings out the inner creativity in all of us and is only held back by our own willingness to venture into the unknown world of our individual creativity and imagination. but above all its just plain fun.
Have as much fun as you want to, can't wait to seed whats next.

I love this book.

I'm a single mom of a ten year old who hims and haws when it's time to come inside and be a part of our family after playing with peers.
I bring this book out over dinner sometimes to inspire conversation with my world-weary son. Even though it feels like it's set up for couples, it's a lovely tool to spark reflective discussion about shared experiences, find common ground, and admire each others creativity and artistic ability.

Filling out this book has been so much fun, whether it be with my cousin, brother, aunt or friend. Not only does it give the opportunity to collaborate with all these amazing people I get to save all this collaborations in the same spot and revisit them easily. I already have a long list of people I want to collaborate with and I can't wait to bring this book to our next encounter!
