Elementary Treatise in Herbology

There are two books and I recommend both. The first Is Elementary Treatise in Herbology. The second is Advanced Treatise in Herbology. I make herbal tonics, make teas etc. when an illness strikes. Sometimes they are not effective. I can tell you that EVERY recipe (whether tea or tonic) from these books have proven amazingly effective. I have an enormous library of herbal remedies. If on a deserted island, I would only take these. If everyone with Whooping Cough would follow the directions, they would not suffer so long. Having had that and no comfort in sight from doctor, I finally found a way to get rid of it. Even gave the recipe to my doctor! While I haven't tried every tincture or infusion, the ones I have tried or have given to others have been extremely effective and gentle. Author tries to not include herbs that have strong side effects. Very good choices and most are quite palatable. True wisdom in these books.

Great introduction to herbology in the form of lessons, by a renowned old-time herbalist

This is a wonderful book by one of the best-known old time American herbalists. I hear Dr. Shook referred to again and again in my herbal studies at the School of Natural Healing, founded by Dr. John Christopher, another great old-time herbalist. The book is in the form of lessons, which were based on a lecture series. Each lesson introduces different herbs as well as preparations and formulas that include those herbs. Many of the preparations and formulas are quite simple (this being an Elementary Treatise, but also because there is no need to complicate something when it works well). Dr. Shook also includes some questions after each lesson to self-test your grasp of the material, with answers provided after the following lesson.
What I like best is the conversational style of Dr. Shook. He speaks to the reader like a friend or esteemed colleague, sharing lore and experience. His love and respect for herbal medicine is infectious (no pun intended!) Like every herbalist, Dr. Shook had his favorite herbs, and many of those he favors are quite well known. A few others, however, were unfamiliar to me.
There are 20 lessons, and if one read a lesson per day, preparing one or more of the formulas for each lesson, you could acquire a considerable foundation in herbology in about 3 weeks, as well as a medicine cabinet full of remedies for common situations.
There is a second volume, Advanced Treatise in Herbology, which is twice as long as this book and which you should definitely get for a more thorough treatment of herbal medicine.

this book is one of hundreds of herbal books i have but it stands out
wish herbal schools would go back to these formulas
