At 22, Marianne Ihlen travelled to the Greek island of Hydra with writer Axel Jensen. Axel wrote and Marianne kept house, until the day Axel abandoned her and their newborn son for another woman. One day while Marianne is shopping in a little grocery store, in walks a man who asks her to join him and some friends outside at their table. He introduces himself as Leonard Cohen, then a little-known writer.

Thus starts a love story that lasts through most of the 1960s and which takes them to Oslo, Montreal and New York and back to Hydra. Meanwhile, Cohen writes “So Long, Marianne,” one of the most beautiful love songs of all time. Peppered with previously unpublished poems, letters, and photographs, So Long, Marianne is an intimate, honest account of Marianne’s journey and a portrait of the international artists’ colony on Hydra in the 1960s.

As any Leonard Cohen fan knows, “So Long, Marianne” is one of his best songs, and it is about a real person. Cohen met Marianne Ihlen (then Marianne Jensen) in 1960 on the Greek island of Hydra, where her husband had abandoned her and her infant son for another woman. “The coming together of Marianne and Leonard was like a slow waltz,” writes Hesthamar. Ultimately, Cohen invited both mother and son to live with him back in Montreal. She accepted and became one of his literary muses. But this is also Marianne’s story, from her youth in Oslo, her marriage, her life on Hydra and with Cohen in Montreal. About the Author
Award-winning journalist Kari Hesthamar wrote this book based on lengthy conversations with Marianne Ihlen and supplemented by interviews with Leonard Cohen. Helle V. Goldman spent her childhood on the Greek island of Hydra and in Providence, Rhode Island. She resides with her husband and daughter on yet another island, this time in Norway—above the Arctic Circle—where she is the chief editor of an international scientific journal. In her free time she is working on a film documentary about Hydra with the Skofteland Film production company.

Interesting but poor writing..

I'm not sure if this has been translated into English and that is the reason why it is so poorly written.

As a die-hard Leonard Cohen fan I will consume anything connected to him which is why I gave it the rating of three stars. If it hadnt been for the connection with Leonard, it would have struggled to garner a single star. Easily the worst written book I have ever read!

Well-translated, gentle love story between soulful folk bursting with sensuality, creativity, love of life. Fate brought their paths together under beguiling Greek skies. Time stood still. Sadly, their roads eventually forked.

This is a favorite book of mine that I read in Norwegian when ...

This is a favorite book of mine that I read in Norwegian when it came out some years ago. I am an admirer of Kari Hesthamar from her home country, Norway. She is a talented writer and radio documentary producer who creates deeply moving stories. Her radio documentary about Marianne Ihlen, who was Leonard Cohen's partner for several years in the 1960s, is tender and respectful. Everyone I spoke to loves the interview, which was made in Norwegian and is available online at NRK. The book "So Long, Marianne" is very well written, in the same no-frills and thoughtful style as the radio documentary. It is excellent news that it's been translated into English and published in Leonard Cohen's home country Canada. May it be translated into many more languages, so that more people can enjoy the beautiful story of these young, talented artists on the Greek island of Hydra.
