Two Walls and a Roof, by John Michael Cahill

Two Walls and a Roof is "Unputdownable" and should be made into a movie, according to numerous readers and comments left on its website www.johnmichaelcahill.com. It is a true the story of an Irish family from Cork Ireland, who were born in a house that was originally an alleyway. It begins in the fifties at a time of great poverty, and carries you along on a roller coaster of emotions for the next sixty years. In her tiny little house an inspiring mother would encourage her children to believe in tomorrow and to laugh always, while she herself battled with a domineering old grandmother and an alcoholic husband.
In their early years two of those children, John and Kyrle would live out one crazy adventure after another, literally mimicking whatever they saw in their mad uncle's picture hall. In time, four more children would arrive, each adding a different way of looking at life, and turning their tiny little house, into a vortex of drama and dreams, while struggling to survive. Despite its small size, their house was a place of great safety, where adversity was laughed at, while they drank tea from their jam jars, read with a candle, and hoped for a better tomorrow.
This book may bring tears to your eyes, but it's much more likely to cause peals of laughter as you see how the Cahill's from Buttevant, individually and collectively dealt with life.
After constant adventures with family colleagues and friends, the author's way of looking at life would begin to change. His search for life's meaning would lead to an incredible and magical adventure, one that you will be part of when you read, Two Walls and a Roof. You will finish the book wanting a second one. About the Author
Born into poverty in 1950, in a house that used to be an alley way. I was stolen by my grandmother at three months, and never given back to my parents who lived just across the street. My life has been filled with one mad adventure after another and this book is just one part of it, but its a part you will not be able to stop reading.

a very funny book bout Ireland ago
By buck
a very funny and heartfelt book. the authors style of writing is pleasantly different. its as if the reader is drawn into his life and we become part of the stories. for me the book is similar to Angelas ashes which i enjoyed immensely. we are given a sense of poverty around Ireland and county cork in the 1950 's and along with it you feel the fighting Irish spirit brought through by the author in funny recounts of his life. very enjoyable.

Honest, heartfelt and revealing
By Aidan Murphy
I really enjoyed this book. John has had an interesting life and shares some great stories. It does put in perspective how much easier life has gotten for us. When one looks at the struggles to survive that took place in rural Ireland in the 50's and 60's, it does place our current economic downturn in context.

Whereas on one hand I felt the book could have been edited a bit more, maybe that would have the lost the rawness and honesty that shines through. What made this book special were the lessons we can all take from it. Love, understanding, forgiveness and honesty burn brightly in the author. He is not afraid to admit where he made mistakes, but likewise is not willing to blame others for any misfortunes that happened to him. I believe that one of the great gifts we have as humans is the ability to take responsibility for our actions and try and shape our destiny. Reading this book helped to reaffirm these beliefs and this alone makes the book a worthy read.

However it would be remiss of me not to mention that there are some great yarns and fabulous social commentary in it as well. Treat yourself and read this book. You will not regret it. Well you might. I couldn't put it down the first night and dealing with two very active young sons in the morning after little sleep is not to be recommended!

Well done Mr. Cahill - not many are brave enough to be so open about themself like you are in this book and we are all the richer for it.

Beyond Angela's Ashes
By Linda Hayes-Lies
I have read many opinions where people compared ( in a good way ) Two Walls and a Roof to Angela's Ashes...I love both books and find laughter, tears, and yes hope in both..What I would like to convey, to people who may say, " I've read Angela's Ashes, why buy this one? " I say to you, that John Cahills journey was much different that Frank McCourts...In both books you will find despair, redemption, hope and most of all courage to find your way out of the darkness that life can sometimes bring.
I would say, that if you made that decision, you would miss some of the most wonderful antics of a young John Cahill in his youth. The horrendous antics that he, his brothers and his friends survived by some miracle...
The love he had for family, perserverence to overcome the poverty that he grew up in.
The strength and sometime quirky resolve of the women in his youth.
I say to you who would pass this up because you read Angela's Ashes, STOP...This is a entirely different journey and one that you will be literally covering all emotions...Laughter, sadness and feel the despair that was John Cahills...Most of all you admire the man who lived this interesting life, and know that no matter to what situation we are born into, we can overcome and become outstanding adults...
