The Book of the Bothy, by Phoebe Smith

An introduction to some of the best bothies in the UK. Featuring 26 selected bothies, the author shares her memories of using these free 'stone tents' in some of the country's wildest and most remote locations. Alongside notes on legends and landscape, wildlife and history, the book is full of expert guidance and tips on how to make use of bothies, from packing lists to bothy etiquette and the best walking routes in. Inspiring and fun, the book showcases bothies in Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacons, Lake District, Pennines, the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, and Northumberland, and is a personal celebration of the world of bothying.

Hidden away in the hills and mountains of England, Scotland and Wales - for years known only to a lucky few - is a network of huts, cottages and shelters. Completely free to use, these secretive refuges can be life-savers, quick stops and destinations in themselves. The network of British bothies is cared for by the Mountain Bothies Association, and day-to-day by the walkers, climbers and mountain lovers who rest there.

About the Author
Growing up on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, in North Wales, Phoebe Smith was bitten by the outdoor bug early. Her love of dramatic landscapes has since led to walking and backpacking adventures all over the world. Of all the places she has been, however, it is the UK (in particular the coastal areas) that holds a special place in her heart. Phoebe is currently editor of Wanderlust magazine. She has also written for many other outdoor magazines including Trail and Country Walking. When not planning her next escapade she is most likely to be found in the mountains, powered by nothing more than her own feet.

An unexpected delight - a wonderful read for those exploring wild places and armchair travellers alike
By A. I. McCulloch
This was an unexpectedly interesting read. Phoebe Smith has produced a true labour of love in this book, an account of 26 of the 100 bothies in the wild places of Great Britain, which are stone or wood permanent shelters, for the free use of walkers, ramblers and climbers. Eighteen of the bothies featured are in Scotland, four in Northen England (the Lake District x 2, the Pennines, and the Borders) and four in Wales. (2 North, 1 Mid, 1 Brecon Beacons).
The bothies featured are of varying shapes and sizes - some are simple small huts with a single room, some have more than one room and basic sleeping platform/fireplaces/kitchen facilities, and a few like Craig in Torridon, a former Youth Hostel are multi-room buildings with good facilities.
Alll are maintained by the charity, the Mountain Bothies Association, whose remit is "To maintain simple shelters in remote country for the use and benefit of all who love wild and lonely places.

Phoebe Smith gives a history of bothies and the MBA, and a quick guide to bothies in general, before giving an account of each bothy, describing her own encounter with the bothy, including photographs and an OS map reproduction. Phoebe also reproduces a simulation or the actual entry of her own "bothy book" jottings for that bothy, each bothy having a journal in which those staying there are expected to record their visit.
The author made a particular point of choosing bothies with a bit of an extra story; the man who inspired RL Stevenson's 'Kidnapped' lived at what is now the bothy of Ben Alder, for example.

The book opens, appropriately, with the very first bothy adopted by the Mountain Bothies Association, Tunskeen in the Galloway Forest, a simple single roomed bothy and ends with the old three - roomed farmstead at Kershopehead in the Borders.
There's a copious appendix of books and website links cross-referenced to each bothy. The book is compact, to be carried in a rucksack or pocket, and the print is small as a result, but one's eyes quickly adapt.
A true labour of love.

A great sense of place
By Dr. Peter Davies
It's rare these days we are actually really present anywhere. We're there, but we may not be paying attention to there- we may be communicating with elsewhere, and not really paying attention. This book is a celebration of another and older tradition- in these bothies you are somewhere, and it's about you and the place. And the other people and animals you may encounter.

This book is about many things. At one level it's a classic guidebook, giving clear routes and facts about these bothies. At another it's a guide around how to use them fairly and well. And some pretty earthy advice around hygiene too.

The book goes a long way beyond these basics. It's really about where the bothies are, what kind of people built them, and have stayed there. The descriptions are a celebration of wilderness, and of passing through it, and resting awhile in it. In this book the bothy's the thing, and the fact that there are mountains around them may be incidental.

Our bothies are a great British resource, provided freely, on a basis of implicit hospitality and trust. This book celebrates them well, and is a likeable introduction to them. I can welcome this book, and recommend it to fellow explorers.

For US readers this book is very British, and celebrates a very British way of enjoying the wilderness in the UK- there's more space here than you may imagine. If you're coming over to UK and spending time walking and exploring this book may well give you some ideas. We'd be glad to meet you.
